Rahul Gandhi has announced Charanjit Singh Channi as the Chief Minister candidate of Congress ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections.
Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi on his visit Ludhiana to announce the party’s Chief Minister candidate. Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee Chief Navjot Singh Sidhu and Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi were the two in the race for the CM candidature.
Just a few hours before the announcement, Navjot Singh Sidhu took to Twitter and wrote that all will abide by Rahul Gandhi’s decision. He wrote, “Nothing great was ever achieved without an act of decision… Warm welcome to our leading light Rahul Gandhi Ji, who comes to give clarity to Punjab… All will abide by his decision !!!”
Congress has conducted a survey to announce its Chief Minister candidate in which the party sought an opinion from MLAs, MPs and the general public. As per the sources, the initial trends showed that Charanjit Singh Channi was getting more votes than Navjot Singh Sidhu.
A few days ago, Navjot Singh Sidhu had made a statement indirectly targetting the party high command. He had said, “Those at the top wanted a weak CM.”
Different leaders of Congress had varied opinions. Senior Congres leader Pratap Singh Bajwa had said that the party won’t get any benefit from announcing the Chief Minister candidate ahead of the elections.
On the other hand, sitting MLA from Gill constituency Kuldeep Vaid reportedly said that people want Charanjit Singh Channi as their Chief Minister.
