Punjab’s Naik Gursewak Singh loses life in Tamil Nadu helicopter crash

An IAF helicopter crashed in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, leaving 13 people on board, dead. India’s first Chief of Defence Staff Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat lost their lives.

From Punjab, Naik Gursewak Singh of Dode Sodhian village in Tarn Taran also died in the helicopter crash. According to the reports, 35-year-old Naik Gursewak Singh was serving with General Bipin Rawat for the past three years.

Gursewak is survived by his father, wife, two daughters and a son. His father worked as a daily wage worker. Gursewak had rejoined the duty two weeks ago as he was on a leave.

Lieutenant Colonel Harjinder Singh was also on board with General Bipin Rawat. He belonged to 11 Gorkha Rifles, the same regiment as that of Gen Rawat. Harjinder Singh had worked in different operations including deployment on the Siachen Glacier. He had also worked in the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission. Lt Col Harjinder Singh originally belonged to Lucknow. Later, his family settled in New Delhi.

Group Captain Varun Singh is the sole survivor of the Mi-17 chopper crash.
